Understanding depression

What it can feel like

Depression shows up differently for different people. For some it is a deep sadness; for others it is more like numbness, exhaustion or irritability. It often affects sleep, appetite, concentration and motivation, and it can quietly erode relationships and work.

It can follow a loss or a difficult period, or seem to arrive from nowhere. Often it sits alongside anxiety, addiction or a harsh inner critic, and part of our work is understanding how these connect for you.

You might notice
  • Low or flat mood
  • Loss of interest
  • Tiredness
  • Withdrawing from people
  • Poor sleep
  • Self‑criticism
  • Hopelessness
  • Difficulty concentrating

You don’t need a diagnosis, or to have it all worked out, to start.

How therapy helps

Calm, collaborative and evidence‑based

CBT can help us understand the cycles that keep low mood going, such as withdrawing, ruminating and self‑criticism, and gently rebuild activity and connection. Person‑centred therapy offers a space to be heard and to make sense of what has happened.

We go at a pace that matches your energy. On difficult weeks, simply turning up is enough.

If you are feeling very low or having thoughts of ending your life, please contact your GP, call 111 or the Samaritans on 116 123, or call 999 in an emergency. Therapy is not an emergency service.
