Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy for Intrusive Thoughts

Intrusive thoughts can be disturbing and confusing. They may appear suddenly and feel difficult to control, sometimes leading to anxiety, shame, or fear.

Many people experience intrusive thoughts at times, but when they become persistent they can begin to affect daily life.

Therapy can help create space to explore and understand these experiences.

What intrusive thoughts can feel like

People often describe intrusive thoughts as:

  • unwanted or disturbing thoughts

  • thoughts that feel out of character

  • repetitive worries or mental images

  • thoughts that cause anxiety or guilt

  • feeling stuck in cycles of rumination

These experiences can be deeply distressing, but they are also more common than many people realise.

How therapy can help

Therapy provides a supportive environment where intrusive thoughts can be explored without judgement.

Together we can begin to:

  • understand the nature of intrusive thoughts

  • explore the anxiety surrounding them

  • develop different ways of responding to them

  • reduce the cycle of fear and rumination

Often the aim is not to eliminate thoughts entirely, but to change the way they are experienced and responded to.

I work as an integrative therapist, drawing on different therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of the person I’m working with. I am trained to provide Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy for OCD and intrusive thoughts.

My aim is to create a calm and reflective space where difficult thoughts and feelings can be explored safely.
